peter cloughton, essex bat group, has again agreed to give us a talk about our bats and then to take us round the park to see and hear them as the sun sets. this will be on tuesday 21st august . booking is now open and our previoue events have been fully booked, so don't miss out click here to book it is really exciting to hear the bats flying over the lake and then to pick them up in your torch beam. tree talk and walk lake meadows is very lucky in having a wonderful collection of trees. these go from the old oaks which marked the ancient field boundaries to many speciomen trees planted in the last century. if you want to learn more about our trees and enjoy an early evening stroll around the park do consider joining us on tuesday 3rd july. a potted history of lake meadows an illustrated talk on the history of lake meadows touching on the land, the people and the park up to the present, was held on tuseday june 26th. the great lake race this year's race took place on sunday 6th may. the weather was fine but the wind could not make up its mind as to which direction to blow causing much consternation to admiral jonny in setting the start point. having set the fleet on its way to strike land first, all except one boat headed in a westerly direction with the one goin north, you guessed that was the boat that won! the majority finished this year and the others were recsued by teh admiral and his trusty crew. the dawn chorus the weather behaved and neil sumner a local wildlife expert led a small group of people, to enjoy the early morning delights of our park. the members of the group had mixed knowledge of birds and their calls, so with neil's help and binoculars to the fore the session was enjoyed by all. late spring highlights the wonderful ox-eye daisies in the boat house compound and the glorious rhododendrons the annual photographic competition we will be running the competition again next year. this time the competition will run from november 2017 through to the end of august 2018. so get out there and capture some wonderful shots while you visit our lovely park. click here for details of the competition, it's rules and the entry form read more about last year's competition and check out some of the photographs. click here. enjoy your walks at lake meadows we still have a few more weeks of winter before we can really say spring is here. those who brave the cold for a brisk walk now, can still find things to see. there is a good display of hellebores in the fern-bed by the compound and the polyanthus in the raised bed are starting to prepare for the warmer days. the garden area with it’s variety of shrubs is never boring and the buds on the rhododendrons promise a great display in a few weeks time. the lake attracts many species of birds and it is good to key an eye on them in the run up to their breeding seasons. we have seen up to three cormorants at a time and one lucky anglers has photographed a kingfisher. as well as our regular residents; the mallards, the canada geese, the coots and the moorhens, we have a pair of tufted ducks and greylag geese. it is amazing to watch the great crested grebe diving for fish and seeing just how far they swim under water. they are not very colourful during the winter but watch out for the reddish ruff developing during the breeding season, the flocks of black headed gulls have a white head at this time of year with a grey spot on the side of the head, again as the breeding season starts that spot becomes black and then later in the year the black (or dark brown) cap develops. volunteers needed we are always looking for volunteers who are willing and able to join us for a couple of hours on a tuesday morning or at our monthly working party. any queries then email us and we will get back to you monthly working party the next working party will take place on april 21st from 9:30am we hope to clear up the flower meadow complete the spring clean which had to be cancelled in march. "many hands make light work" do consider joining us. the gardening group meets every tuesday morning at 9:30am. we are still looking for volunteers. so why not come and join our friendly group no special skills required! hopefully you are appreciating the garden area, but it takes a lot of effort to keep on top of the jobs, so do think about joining us. autumn in lake meadows before the autumn colours become a distant memory check out some more autumn scenes c arols in the park our annual carols event was held on saturday 16th dec. the weather was dry and chilly, but about 180 to 200 people of all ages congregated around the christmas tree by the boat house. following some festive fare and drinks we had some fifteen carols. although perhaps not up to the king's college choir standards it provided a lovely introduction to christmas. the child in the park we are delighted to say that the "child in the park" has been re-installed onto its plinth in the garden of the child.
